Papayas
The photograph was taken before a lightning
strike early in August damaged two papaya
trees: the male with yellow flowers on stalks
(lower left) and the female with a cluster of
fruit (right of middle near top and close-up
in lower right inset). Unfortunately, the
fruit-bearing tree does not look as if it will
recover; but other papaya trees in a
different part of the garden are doing fine.
The thick trunk seen near the top of the
photograph is that of a laurel oak. This tree
does not appear to be damaged, but a number
of plants under the tree were destroyed.
