September 1997 - Gingers

We did not intoduce any new gingers into the garden this year. The September page from 1996 will be retained here. The September 1997 Garden Scenes page is about a broomweed bush.

September 1996 - Gingers

Our stand of butterfly ginger lilies began producing flowers late in July. The "pine cones" of the pine cone gingers appeared earlier that month. Each of the two kinds of ginger was started from a single bulb planted under a laurel oak tree last year and each flowered last year as well.

The curcuma ginger pictured at the bottom of the page was started from a single bulb three years ago. It bloomed for the first time this year, but there was only one flower stalk.

Pine cone ginger (Zingiber Zerumbet ). In time the "pine cones" turn completely red. Very pale greenish-yellow flowers appear sporadically. The "pine cone" photographs were taken on August 20 and 21 of 1996. Foliage is pictured on the right.

Ginger lily (Curcuma ). Only the foliage is pictured here. (A photograph of a curcuma ginger lily flower is shown in the May 1997 issue.)
