Concerning the American Dream Coalition
Return to Home Page
Less well known than the Congress for the New Urbanism is the American Dream Coalition, which opposes smart growth. It supports home ownership. It is critical of the promotion of high-density residential development together with mass transit, particularly rail mass transit, as an effective solution to the problems of urban congestion and pollution. A good introduction to the purposes of the American Dream Coalition can be found in the opening paragraphs of this Thoreau Institute paper.

The president of the American Dream Coalition is Randal O'Toole, who lives near Portland, Oregon. Much of his critical writing has been directed against smart growth measures adopted in the Portland area. He began a daily (week days) blog in January 2007. See his January 1, 2008, blog for more information about his schedule. O'Toole's most recent book is The Best-Laid Plans: How Government Planning Harms Your Quality of Life, Your Pocketbook, and Your Future, and it is available at the Pflugerville Community Library, catalog number 336.97 OTOO 2007.
